Learn to become a Swimming Teacher

Splashtastic now offer a range of Water Safety Ireland accredited Swimming courses. All courses are accredited by WSA which are widely recognised. The Water Safety Ireland Assistant Swimming Teacher Award course is the perfect step to begin your exciting journey as a swimming instructor. The course is ran over 4 days with theory and practical sessions each day. No previous experience is required. Our tutors are fully qualified and have over 30 years experience in the leisure industry.

WSA Assistant Swimming Teacher Award - Level 1

Aims:

To assist and work under the direction of a fully qualified Swimming Teacher on a professional or voluntary basis.

To give candidates a basic technical and practical knowledge for the teaching of swimming to groups of 6 pupils under the direction of a fully qualified Swimming Teacher.

To provide candidates with an understanding of health and safety issues in swimming pools.

Course Content / Syllabus:

  • General Information
  • Health & Safety
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Learning & Skill Development
  • Integration of those with Additional Needs
  • Scientific Principles of Movement in the Water
  • Swimming Strokes: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Inverted Breaststroke.
  • Other Aquatic Skills Relevant to the Teaching of Swimming
  • Stroke and Aquatic Skills Analysis
  • Practical Teaching

Course Structure:

  • The course will consist of a minimum of 24 hours theory and 8 hours poolside practice.

Preferred Pre-Requisites

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years prior to the course start date
  • Ideally, a Lifesaving award, Safety 4 award or equivalent, although this is not essential

WSA Swimming Teacher Award - Level 2

Aims:

  • To set and maintain the highest standards for those who wish to participate in the teaching of swimming on a professional or voluntary basis.
  • To ensure best practices are followed from both safety and child welfare points of view.

Course Content / Syllabus:

  • General Information
  • Health & Safety
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Learning & Skill Development
  • Integration of those with Disabilities or Additional Needs
  • Scientific Principles of Movement in the Water
  • Swimming Strokes: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Inverted Breaststroke, Life Saving Side Stroke
  • Other Aquatic Skills Relevant to the Teaching of Swimming
  • Stroke and Aquatic Skills Analysis
  • Practical Teaching

Course Structure:

  • The course will consist of a minimum of 40 contact hours, to include theory and a minimum of 8 hours practical poolside teaching.

Preferred Pre-Course Requirements and Recommendations:

  • Candidates must hold a Water Safety Ireland Assistant Swimming Teacher Award or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Candidates must provide proof of having completed at least 20 hours of practical teaching under the direction of a fully qualified Swimming Teacher.
  • Candidates must have completed and hold a valid recognised Child Welfare / Code of Ethics course.
